Comedone or acne is a disease which is characterized by a suppurative inflammation of sebaceous glands. The ducts of sebaceous glands become clogged up with sebaceous matter, which decomposes. And because of joining of infection, a symptomatic inflammation of surrounding tissues appear.
About 60-80% of teenagers and young people at the age from 12 to 24 suffer from so-called acne vulgaris or common acne in this or that form. In one case out of three a serious and sometimes rather continuous medical treatment is required.
As it is considered by 80% of young men and girls, acne is the most unattractive thing about the human appearance.
Acne can strongly reduce the self-appraisal, lead to depressions and anxiety, provoke the feeling of self-ugliness (which is often imaginary). For people suffering from acne, it’s difficult to adapt to social environment, they are often lonely and unemployed.
Acne is a disease, that is typical not only for the youth, but for adult people as well. As a rule, it happens against the background of endocrine diseases, which are characterized by seborrhea.
The reasons of the appearance of acne can be different. Some of them are gastrointestinal tract disorder, metabolic derangements, incorrect dietary habits, heredity, lack of vitamins (group “B”) and microelements (zink, iodine, sulphur), problems of sexual glands and adrenals functioning.
There exist several clinical forms of acne:
- Acne albida (milium) – tiny (as a pinhead) white nodules. Such acne are usually singular or located in small groups on the face, sometimes on the eyelids or zygomatic bones.
- Acne-comedones (or black spots). They usually appear because of stagnation of secretion in excretory ducts of sebaceous glands, especially on oily skin. They tend to appear in the area of nose, forehead, chicks, chin, back and chest.
- Acne vulgaris or common acne is, basically, a chronic inflammatory disease of sebaceous glands. They are observed on the skin of face, chest and back. As a rule, they appear in the pubertal period and are connected with the changes that take place in a teenager’s organism. Other reasons of the development of acne vulgaris can be an incorrect nutrition or lack of cosmetic treatment of the face skin.
- Acne pustulosa – painful nodules with a purulent head. Such acne are of deep red colour.
- Phlegmonous or inflammatory acne. They can be superficial or deep. The first type of phlegmonous ance capture only excretory duct of a sebaceous gland, while the second one affects the whole gland.
- Acne conglobata is a heavy form of acne which is caused by staphylococcus. It’s more typical for men. They appear on a lateral surface of cheeks, neck, chest or back when the immunity is reduced. Painful nodules suppurate and after pus discharge they heal by granulation.
- Medicamental acne (acne artificialis). They appear as a result of any drug intolerance (for example, iodic preparation). Such acne causes pruritus, burning and usually looks as an appearance of skin rash or small purulent nodules of red colour.
- Professional acne. They are typical for people, who often contact with dust, coal, lubricants and different chemical emulsions.
There are 4 degrees of acne severity:
I – Ance affects, generally, forehead, chin and nose (T-zone); comedones are mostly open, a deal of closed comedones is insignificant.
II – Single papule and pustulae appear; Acne spread out of a T-zone.
III – Acne affects face completely, skin rash spreads out to the chest and back.
IV – This degree is often attended with cicatrization. Deep, merging painful inflammatory elements are observed. (cystous form of acne).
For the treatment of the first and the second degrees, it’s quite enough to keep the diet and use some cosmetic methods. The third and the fourth degrees require the consultation of dermatologist and taking some antibiotics.
